formats
Which format for which use
The international standard, with no spaces. What most CRMs, APIs and calling tools expect.
Readable and dialable from any country: signatures, websites, contacts abroad.
The local format, for an audience in the same country.
Makes the number clickable on a web page or in an email (RFC 3966).
limits
What the tool checks, and what it doesn't
Checked, for 245 countries and territories
- The country code and the length of the number
- That the prefix belongs to an allocated range
- The line type set by the numbering plan: mobile, landline, VoIP, toll-free…
Not checked
- Whether the line is active today
- Who the number belongs to
- Whether it reaches the person or a reception desk
In the US and Canada, mobiles and landlines share the same ranges, so the type shows as “Landline or mobile”. The rules come from libphonenumber, Google's open-source library, also used by Android.
